This is the sixth time we have used the English Surfing Federation Surf School. The range of activities they offer are both challenging and excellent. To have the opportunity to receive professional tuition from top quality coaches and British champions is fantastic. Their personal and enthusiastic approach allows even the weakest of swimmers to enjoy themselves and be confident in the mentoring and support given. The school is further endorsed by the big names in surfing, bodyboarding and coasteering.
The excitement, enthusiasm, determination and teamwork that was displayed by 30-40 young soldiers, who had never surfed before was infectious. All of the students developed in skill and self confidence even managing to catch a wave or two by the end of the lesson.
The Coasteering is an excellent opportunity to challenge you both physically and mentally. The soldiers completed arduous swims in quite testing conditions, climbed rock faces and finally projected themselves from in excess of 40 ft into rough seas. The safety aspect is clearly paramount to the team of professional lifeguards, who most importantly know the area and tides.
The encouragement and guidance they gave the soldiers was fantastic. The strength and confidence displayed by young soldiers was testament to the teaching skills and enthusiasm of the instructors.
Soldiers pushing themselves through boundaries they might not normally even attempt were just up our street. Fundamental transferable skills we require in every day soldiering.
In summary, these weekends are fantastic value and offer our trainee soldiers’ a break from their intense Phase 2 training programme, developing there core skills, placing them out of their comfort zone, whilst most importantly, having fun and a few story’s to tell when they return home.
The Rip Curl ESF Surf School, Coastline Coasteering and Rob Barber's Bodyboarding School donated a number of prizes to Soldier Magazine's annual Christmas give away. The prize draw gives some Christmas cheer to those serving in Afganistan, as well as those spending the festive season with out them.

Bodyboard Coaching week, May 2009.
"Rob, Brendan and Aidan,
We've arrived back safe and sound,
We would like to thank you all for an excellent week of coaching, between the 4 - 8 May 09.
All the lads who attended your coaching course have thoroughly enjoyed their time
with you and the guys. The instruction was excellent and service and support
throughout the week was to highest standards.
We are now back to work and the work place is buzzing with stories of our exploits
both in and out of the water! All those who participated are now confident enough to
venture up to Portrush and tackle some big ones soon. We're all missing the TOLCARNE WEDGE very much!!!
We hope to make plans for another training week after the summer and now hope
to book a winter session soon after- Morocco is still our favourite choice.
Once again Rob a big thank you to you and the guys and see you very soon."
Second lieutenant Charlie Jones, Number 2 Company. 1st Battalion Irish Guards
"I took my platoon of 25 men coasteering for adventurous training, with none
of us having done it before. It was absolutely awesome and all the boys loved it.
The jumps were high enough to challenge the men, some had to take a bit of
time before making the final plunge.
Excellent fun and a great break from military exercises and guards.
The instructors were brilliant and made the day the success it was"
