Have you ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a surf pro and thought
that it would be great to learn what makes them tick when they are in the water?
Well now as a result of the Freespirit sponsorship of the English Surfing Federation
(ESF) surf school, people have a unique opportunity to learn to surf this summer with
some of England’s top pros. The Freespirit ESF surf school is running four
special ‘Learn to Surf with the Pros’ clinics throughout the summer
including days that are specific to girls surfing and bodyboarding. The pro
surfer clinics will take place at the epicentre of British surfing, Fistral Beach,
Newquay and the series will be launched with a clinic led by English champion Mark
‘Egor’ Harris on the 22nd of this month.
The Freespirit ESF surf school is one of Newquay’s leading surf instruction
centres and offers the best value for money and top safety standards in a laid back,
fun, safe environment and atmosphere. The ESF is particularly special because all profits
from the surf school, generated from the lessons sales, are ploughed straight back into
supporting promising English surfers and providing the framework of support that they
need to develop as the next generation of top athletes.
The new Freespirit Learn to Surf with the Pros Clinics add yet another dimension to
the surf school and ‘Egor’ Harris will led the first session. Egor, 24, is
one of Britain's top young surfers and already has a BPSA tour champion title under his belt.
2006 is set to be a big year as he has bagged himself a wildcard entry into the WQS Rip
Curl Boardmasters contest so has the chance to really show what he can do on his home turf
of Fistral. Egor is taking time out of his busy schedule to run one of the exciting
Freespirit clinics and is sure to motivate the participants and provide some key
insights into what makes him tick and how this can be applied to riding waves.
Egor says “The ESF has given me so much framework and support in my career so
it’s great to be able to give something back to them. I’m really looking
forward to introducing more people to the sport of surfing. It’s really important
to develop the UK surfing scene at the grass roots levels so the ESF pro surf clinics
are a really great idea. It’s going to be fun.”
Egor’s clinic is the first of four - on the 19th August, Llewellyn Whittaker,
now sitting at 6th place on the BPSA tour, will run a day’s clinic. On the 28th
August there is set to be a girls-only clinic with Dominque Munro. And on the 16th
September top bodyboarder Rob Barber will take to the waves with keen participants.
Rob is also the head coach at the Freespirit ESF Surf School and he says, “We’re
really stoked that the Freespirit backing of the ESF surf school has made it possible for
us to be running these clinics. We think that it is going to have such a positive impact
on the UK surfing scene and as a result of the Freespirit deal across all their stores
we’re expecting that people will come from all over the country to attend the pro
days. The ESF is all about getting as many people as possible surfing and it’s great
to be linking our surf school work with the English team and making it possible for
the pros to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm.”
Following the clinic’s full day lesson there will be a chillout BBQ with the pros
and Freespirit ESF Surf School staff. Participants will also receive 10% discount
and a loyalty card to be used in any of Freespirit’s 42 UK shops. It will certainly
be a day to remember. The clinics cost £50 including the BBQ.
