Further information about the course:

The course caters for riders who have surfed before but want to improve. So from surfers who can stand but are looking to develop their technique for riding green waves, through to competent shredders. Russ's coaching team (which includes some of the country's top surfers) split the group in to rider ability levels so that everyone is taught skills relevant to where their surfing's at. If there are elements of your surfing that you're keen to focus on (paddling, wave selection, cutbacks, re-entries even airs or tube riding), then the team can help with this, as well as giving your overall surfing performance a solid push in the right direction.

Who'll be coaching us?

Russ's team of coaches are fully insured professionals who have many years of experience. They are all qualified lifeguards and surf instructors as well as having spent heaps of time surfing themselves. They'll cover everything from equipment choice, to waxing your board, to air reverses! Their experience and unbiased opinion will help with every aspect of surfing from buying kit to choosing a travel destination.

Which Coaching Techniques are used?

There's plenty of beach work to ensure you get your head round the techniques that will help you improve quickest. Once you're in the water the instructors will ride with you on waves, paddle with you, and go through moves with you until you've cracked them. They'll then use video analysis to identify problems and troubleshoot technique faults, including using slo-mo to analyse body positioning, weight distribution and technique when you see for yourself you'll improve quicker.

Who's in charge of filming?

The video is handled by Carve videographer Sam Buckle. This will be used during the classroom work, and you'll also get a DVD of the action to take home and to work from (and to show your mates your new moves!)

Who will I learn with?

You will be coached as an individual but the group will be split in to both ability groups and in to workshops (focusing on cutbacks for example). It's a great opportunity to learn not only from rider specific coaching, but also from the mistakes and improvements that other like-minded surfers are making during the course.

What should I bring?

It's generally best if you bring your own kit you'll be more likely to continue improving if you've used your own board for the weekend. If that's not practical (if you're flying down for example) or you want to try a different board then this can be arranged. We also have plenty of boards that you can test over the course of the weekend (enquire when booking if you want to experiment with a specific type of board).

Also bring an appropriate wettie and some warm, loose clothing that you can easily change into and out of, and a pair of trainers. Thin layers and a warm, waterproof jacket are essential.

Social stuff!

We will be holding an optional barbecue in the evening of the Saturday at Tolcarne beach. Newquay's nightlife can also be sampled on Saturday night for those who fancy it...!

Location

The Rip Curl ESF Surf School, Carnmarth Hotel, 30 Headland Road, Newquay, Cornwall, TR7 1HN. For directions check out our location page.

I want to attend but I can't be there for the whole weekend?

If you can't make it for the whole weekend then we can customise the course to the time that you have available by dividing it in to morning and afternoon session (£55 per session). If you have to leave on the Sunday afternoon, for example, then you can pay £165 to take part in Saturday morning and afternoon, Sunday morning and then leave at lunchtime. All participants receive a goodie bag, and a DVD of the weekend regardless.

Fitness

The fitter that you are, the more you will get out of the course but it isn't boot camp! If you're tired you can rest and re-join the group when you've got your energy back. It's a matter of everybody improving at their own pace and there'll be a laid back feel to the course. Plus the more tired you get, the harder it is to learn or improve performance. There's no age limit on the course, and give us a call to discuss any specific requirements.

Photography

Professional photography will be taken of the event and will be available to purchase after the weekend. This will include both land and water images.
